Highland Park High School Mama Drama

I received this anonymous fax about some drama going on with a particular group of Highland Park High School students and their moms. Sorry to the faxer for de-identifying but this is a group I don’t mess with.

    Everyday I am SO thankful my daughter decided NOT try out for Belles- way too much drama ! Is the Fringe really worth it? I am always curious what colleges outside of Texas actually really think about a Drill team?

    OMG! Glad my kid’s not working towards becoming a “XXXXX”! So, does this mean that there’s like, a “XXXXX” Mom-Mafia? The “XXXXXs” seem like such awesome students; hard-working, civic-minded high achievers. I’m shocked to learn that there’s any naughty behavior going on, much less strong-arm tactics from the “XXXXX” moms. Who knew our lovely “XXXXXs” could breed such perfidy??

    So, if I’m readying this right, some of the senior Belles got caught doing something wrong. It’s not clear that the “response of the faculty sponsor” was unwelcome because it was a punishment or because it was too lenient. I’m curious to know what that’s all about.

    Only one of the HPISD Trustees appears to have a Belle daughter…

    This is pathetic, but no one who’s lived here for any amount of time doubts the veracity of it. But let’s be honest, replace “Belles” with any other activity in this town, and it would be just as believeable. Or unbelieveable, as the case may be.

    I also love how she felt it necessary to say that she is not a “transplant”

    My understanding is that the Senior XXXXXX girls were told not to dress up on Goth day, but did anyway.

    Not sure if this is the same situation but I understand that the faculty advisor was very upset.

    The XXXXXX’s are super kids as are 99% of all the kids at HPHS.

    A much better % than many urban high schools.

    This stuff happens EVERYWHERE, not just the Park Cities. Remember the cheerleader mom in Houston that put a hit out on her daughters competition? This mom is being as dramatic as the mom’s she’s accusing, I’d say. This is so……..high school.
    This is the time of year for Belle drama – tryouts are next week. It’ll die down after that, until next year.

    FYI is on the right track. There is no such thing as Goth day, there was a dress up day, forget the theme. The senior XXXX were told after am rehearsal NOT to dress up as Goth as there are some kids in the HS that dress that way and as leaders of the school they should take the high road and not make fun of others at the HS. The XXXXX were told they would be punished if they disobeyed. SO they basically shot the finger at their director and moments later appeared dressed in Goth and told the director to take it up with Mommy.

    @FYI – Yes, thank goodness our kids are SO MUCH BETTER and MUCH MORE PERFECT than any of those urban school kids. Scary!

    It’s not the kids that are the problem, it’s the parents.

    Kids are kids, many times in my youth I didn’t do what I was told to do, as I’m sure all of us have. The difference is, when someone called my parents, they disciplined me. They didn’t defend me, or make excuses,or threaten other parents if they didn’t agree. They acted like, well, parents.

    The senior Belles, as we’ve all figured out by now, decided to participate in “Senior Emo Day” during Homecoming spirit day, which their coach warned them not to. That’s where all the senior dressed in black, etc. To their defense, apparently she told them the morning of, so they didn’t have any other clothes to change into after practice. But it is true that they threatened to sue. So their coach was apparently quite scared and basically let the seniors dictate how practice was going to work and what time it would start for a couple weeks. The junior Belle that explained this to me shared that this really hampered their practicing since most of them didn’t want to practice and the coach just had to go along with it because she was scared of legal issues.

    What were they going to sue over? Being held accountable to someone other than themselves?

    Seriously, why was the coach afraid of their threat to sue? What was the basis of the suit?

    Not if mommy has anything to say about it! My daughter is different, they just don’t see it. My girl has gone this long in life without any rules or restrictions, I’m not about to let some gym teacher start now.

    @Sally – no one wins? The best dancers do indeed win – spots on the squad. It’s not judged by student vote, so dancing ability and good grades are what you have to bring to the table, and the best dancers win. What @Jeff Duffey said – tis indeed life.

    What I really love is the boot quaking threat was to block these girls from getting into a sorority – like that will RUIN the rest of their life. I know countless intelligent successful women who OMG were not in sororities. If these women actually behave this way, would you actually want your daughter to be in the type of organization that formed their ideas of ethics and people skills.

    Rumor has it that two of the girls pressed crimial charges on the sponsor for assault. However, the UP police investigated and found no basis for the accusation. Another reason the sponosr had to retain a lawyer.

    This incident was a great example of bad parenting…the parents of the girls involved clearly believe that teens should always be believed over teachers – no matter what the facts. I think one of the other postings mentioned that a school board member was involved, so you can guess the outcome.

    The girls only made a dumb teen mistake…the parents (and administration who apparently overruled the teacher’s punishment) taught the kids that the privledged do not face the consequences of their actions – at least in HPISD. Great lesson for our community.
