   After 4 years of resisting getting handheld gaming devices for our kids, this year we’re finally breaking down and getting them each an iPod Touch. I hate to do it, but their grandparents argued that, at some point, there’s a risk they will get labelled as “weird” for being completely out of touch with all the video game stuff.

   @1Zima … just make sure that you pull it out of the box and get it set up like you want it. For example, connected to your home wireless, perhaps removing the browser, perhaps (depending on their maturity) not connecting it to the net at all. Of course, getting it charged up and putting some fun apps on it. Put passwords to the app store that only you control. Remove email access. Again, as you want, not as they want.

   My 15 year old asked what he should put on his Christmas list because he couldn’t think of anything. I’m thinking Scotwear for the whole family. Is the Scot Shop still open this week?

   My older high school boy is into “retro” games – ones they played years ago when they were “little”, very cheap to buy, used is fine. And he wants a new computer, but he wants the parts to build his own super-computer. I love my geeky boy.

   I’ve done Scots wear for all the family in the PC years past – t-shirts, Sweats, pajama pants, shorts. It’s easy and they like it. They should have some hours this week, call them Phone Number (214)219-0487

   1Zima2Many: You are not alone. We have 0 video games. We have cube-shaped TV’s. Mine are not allowed iPods EVER due to risk of hearing damage (one child is hearing-impaired already). No iphones or cell phones yet. But we decided to get them something techy for Christmas–Kindles. Kids have them at school and they are considered cool. I have downloaded lots of free classic books, as well as buying them some current titles. I’m hoping this will appease the hi-tech hunger for the next year.

   As an aside, I refuse to participate in furthering the success of the $170 logo appearing on the Northface fleece. Same fleeces at Target-Champion brand: $30 bucks. My poor kids will just have to get used to being “weird,” I’m afraid.

   @bob’s mom, Over all the Kindle is a great gift however, its the only ereader that 1)limits whom you can buy from…Amazon only(Nook and google’s soon to be out Ereader can purchase books from multiple sources) and 2) tracks all of your purchases and sells your info to companies that will then solicit you. All other ereader sellers have pledged not to do that.

   PS what are the latest Uggs? We still love the classic.

   All of the above are on my middle-schoolers list! Except not Uggs …. more expensive Tory Burch Ugg looking boots. Dont worry, she’s not getting most of her list and she knows it! Though, according to her … and I think she’s right … she is the only one of her friends that does not have an iphone 4. What does a 11-12 year old need one for?

    Adore my Kindle, I’ve had it for two years now and it’s wonderful. I have downloaded the free Kindle app on my iphone too, and can access my library on my phone – so I stopped taking the Kindle out and about with me and use my phone for that. I bought it at the beginning of a long stretch of medical treatment, 8 months of doctors, hospitals and treatment – BEST thing I did to get thru it all was have the Kindle. Over the last 6 months I’ve been reading classics – that you can download for free – so fun and so free! Love. Now when my Kindle dies – and they do, I’m on my 3rd, but luckily they were both under warranty – but if it dies not under warranty, I want an ipad. Badly, I want an ipad. No good excuse to buy one now, though, have to wait on the Kindle death.
    If you are giving a Kindle to a kid buy the extended warranty for sure, they are not tough at all. My laptop is tougher than my Kindle – my only complaint, though.

    @bob’s mom – I am feeling judged! I’m sure you didn’t intend it! Ownership of a “logo” item doesn’t mean de facto that a kid is spoiled rotten. My big present for my 15-year-old daughter is a pair of Uggs. $140. She loves them! She is also getting perfume ($40), a watch ($50), and some books ($35). She doesn’t own an eReader. Christmas seems like the perfect time to give a special gift. If children aren’t interested in designer items but are interested in electronic gadgets, then it’s a perfect time for those as well. Live and let live! Merry Christmas!

    hpparent: I never said anyone who buys a Northface fleece is anything except being “fleeced,” IN MY OWN OPINION. That zip-up jacket every other person in this neighborhood owns is almost $200 bucks, and as far as I can tell, identical to the Champion one that is $30 or $35 dollars. So people are paying about $170 for a logo. That disturbs ME but you can spend your money on anything you choose- this is America. Pay the money and wear your logos with pride. As you say, live and let live!

    Personally, I am trying to show my kids that you shouldn’t get your self-esteem from any logo, but from your own skills, talents and achievements. For this same reason we do not drive luxury brand cars, although we could afford them. Everyone gets to choose how they spend their money and this is how WE are choosing to do it.

    I did see a young attractive woman wearing a “Southbutt” fleece today. It made me totally happy. She was from Indiana.
