HPISD to Seek Waiver For Extra Snow Days

This just in from the district:

This week’s “superstorm” shut down schools across Dallas-Fort Worth for four days. We will plan to use our designated makeup days, March 21 and April 21. We will be discussing waiver options for the remaining two days with the Texas Education Agency and will let you know more as we work through that process.

    we didn’t have four in twelve years.
    the district took pride in being open
    when all the others were closed.
    virtually every family in the district
    has at least one SUV that could
    carry five or six students to school
    and back.
    further evidence of the wussification
    of america.

    former scot #24-Obviously you have no concern for the safety of the employees, most of whom don’t live within a mile of the schools. Some live in far away places like Waxahachie, Frisco, and Hurst. Maybe you’ve heard of those places.

    Is it that hard to tack on 2 days at the end of the year? Recent headlines pointed out that we are falling behind in most areas of education and that other countries have longer and more school days. It is embarrassing that we can’t even live up to our own middle-of-the-road standards.

    Furthermore, we have paid for those 2 days with our taxes. Don’t we deserve to get what we paid for?

    I think that energy concerns played a significant part in the “closing” decision. Schools are huge users of energy and given the rolling blackouts, I’m sure that was at least part of the issue. At least my daughter is looking forward to school now – one or two days was fun. Four was boring!

    I am grateful to HPISD for closing school. It was a good use of my tax dollars.

    If you think a lot of learning gets done when all routines are off and snow is falling outside, think again.

    @DemBones No one is arguing that there WAS learning going on while we had four days off, unless you count learning new ways to annoy your parents and siblings. But I think it was a matter of public safety and energy concerns. We get it-you pay a lot of taxes. Are you Grump in disguise?

    I LOVED the snow days. I loved them as a child in HP and I love them now as an adult with kids in HP. I am thankful HPISD had the courage to close school. We will gladly make up two days and two days without class is not going to make my children fall behind in school.

    Thank you HPISD – my children will always remember how fun this winter was.

    I realize snow days are fun for many but it is also about sticking to a commitment. Making up two days can’t be that difficult and teachers, administration and children should be committed to doing their jobs. There is plenty of time for fun in the sun when summer rolls around.

    No learning will get done during those 2 days after Memorial Day. The education gap widens.
