Rise and Shine, Park Cities (2-17-11)

As usual, decorated folk are visiting the Park Cities, representing them, and giving us cause to get out of the house. A few award (and ribbon) winners on today’s radar:

1. Highland Park High School’s celebrated Literary Festival kicks off today with the arrival of Tony and Pulitzer-winning writer Doug Wright. You needn’t be a student to get an earful; Wright’s keynote speech is 7 p.m. tonight at the high school, and all are welcome. The Grey Gardens and I Am My Own Wife author is also slated for a 1 p.m. interview with KERA’s Krys Boyd.

2. Kudos to the Highland Belles. The drill team took first place overall at Saturday’s regional competition in Grapevine, and is preparing for more fancy footwork March 5 in Orlando.

3. Now here’s a long title. University Park architect Edwin Smith has received the 2011 award for Best Adaptive Re-Use of an Existing Building in the Stemmons Corridor from the Stemmons Corridor Business Association.

In simpler terms, he’s turned a dated building into a slick piece of work.

    In-N-Out is notoriously close-guarded with their release dates, sometimes only announcing them a week ahead of time. But I’ll try!

    A California friend tells me there is no franchisee, they are all company owned and operated which sounds like good news. How hard can it be to turn a Steak and Shake into an N-in-Out? They serve burgers, fries and drinks. Period, no chicken, no taco, no breakfast, no McRibs, no toys, just the basics. @G, it’s on Central just north of Southwestern, where the Steak & Shake was, next to Taco Bueno and Guitar Center. Is there any drive thru joint other than Bubbas in all of the Park Cities proper?

    As a California native, (but I got to Texas as fast as I could) I can tell you that In N Out is a class act. This is not just any fast food place. Clean restaurants, good pay and excellent training for their employees (read better service), and fresh food. Order this way, “Double Double with onion, fries and a shake. And a t-shirt.” If you’re on a diet, skip the shake. Only drawback to this place? The lines! But it’s worth it.
