State Grants HPISD Waiver For Extra Snow Days

While students have to return from spring break a day earlier than anticipated (March 21), the state has granted HPISD a waiver for the extra missed school days due to snowmageddon. See this WFAA report for more.

    Do you know why the state grants these waivers? I’ve yet to see a reason as to why they don’t have to make up the days.

    @Gringo Bling: According to the TEA website, after a district files a winter weather waiver (say that five times fast!) it’s up to the agency commissioner as to whether the waiver will be granted: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index.aspx?id=6635&menu_id=932&menu_id2=788

    I would have been a little peeved if the waiver hadn’t been granted. For all the talk of “making every hour of every school day count,” or whatever the jargon-speak is, it’s not like there isn’t a lot of wasted time at HPISD. Particularly after the TAKS tests are over. True story: Q: “What did you do in science class today, son?” A: “We just watched Air Bud on DVD again. The same first hour of it that we always watch. The teacher was busy doing something.”.

    Air Bud’s available on DVD? I only own the VHS edition- time to upgrade.

    @Gringo: Now that you mention it, it might have been VHS. I don’t have anything against athletic golden retrievers, you understand. But this is the same school district that feels compelled to load the kids down with X hours of homework each night to show how “serious” it is. And they wouldn’t even let them finish the darned movie. Just the same first half, over and over . . . .
