Rise and Shine, Park Cities (5-3-2011)

1. Not much going on at tonight’s UP City Council meeting. Other than the city discussing the the inclusion of an Apache helicopter at the July 4 parade. No big deal, really, just a $12 million piece of American muscle landing in Goar Park.

The Rotary Club is trying to set up the gig, and the chopper will be stationary throughout the whole parade and picnic. Still, chopper. July 4. The only thing that would make this more American is if Abraham Lincoln and Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf came out and sang a duet of Neil Diamond’s “America.”

2. Early voting for the HPISD Board of Trustees election kicked off yesterday. Cast your ballot at the Administration Building board room from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 6, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 9 and 10. Check out this Friday’s Park Cities People for a look at both the candidates, their backgrounds, and their platforms.

And if you don’t already know, Sam Dalton and Amy Titus are running for the seat currently held by John Bunten, who isn’t seeking reelection. You get that news for free.

3. Congratulations are in order for former Highland Park Mayor Bob Mullins. Mullins’ equipment company, ROMCO, celebrated its 50th anniversary May 1. The company launched in Dallas in 1961 as R.O. Mullins Company, and has now expanded to eight branches across the state. Congrats, Bob.
