Rise and Shine, Park Cities (6-21-11)

1. We heard from a little birdie over the weekend that Cafe Pacific might be moving out of Highland Park Village. Since those rumors also floated around a bit last year, I called Hillary Artzt at the Village to check it out. Her response, in total: “NO!! Total rumor.”

She added in another email that Cafe Pacific exercised their lease option last year, and will be in the center for the foreseeable future. So, if you’re the person who started this rumor, now’s a decent time to stop spreading it.

2. I always like University Park City Council meetings. For one, they’re not at 8 a.m. like Highland Park’s. Plus, their chamber has windows. Long meetings go by quicker with sunlight, I find.

Tonight, though, I’ll like the UP City Council meeting for an entirely different reason. Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle, hometown PGA golfer Harrison Frazar, and lifeguard-turned-hero Bonner Morren will all be presented with awards and recognitions for their various feats in recent weeks.

I know Bonner will be at the ceremony, and last week UP’s Steve Mace was trying to round up Carlisle and Frazar. We’ll see tonight if he was successful.

Also look for a full story on Morren’s heroism in Friday’s paper. As someone who lifeguarded for four years, all I can say is bravo.

3. The rest of the UP agenda is pretty slow, but hey, it’s the end of June. What do you expect?

One ray of interest: the city expects to approves a $182,000 contract with PSA-Dewberry to design the interior of the new public library. Progress!

    Bonner has always been such a great kid! When my son was a freshman Bonner was his “student tutor”. Whenever my son was out sick(he had a chronic ailment) Bonner would work with him during one period a day to help him catch up. I cannot say enough wonderful things about him, he was such a smart, hard working, accomplished young man, such a good influence on my then very young and impressionable freshman son. I can’t wait to tell my son that it was Bonner that saved that baby, he’ll be happy to know Bonner is still doing so well!
