HPISD Considering Rooftop Cell Antennas

In an effort to mitigate cuts in state funding, HPISD recently made a request for proposals to install antennas on the rooftops of the district’s schools.

After the request was made in June, one company responded, and the company is currently assessing the district’s potential for antennas.

“In a time of diminished state funding, this is an opportunity to create some recurring resources,” said Superintendent Dawson Orr. “It deserves to be explored.”

Orr stressed that the antennas would be small, and on the roofs of buildings. There would be no stand-alone cell towers. As the company’s assessment continues, the possible revenue stream will become clearer, Orr said.

Companies often install towers or antennas on private or public property, then engage in revenue sharing with the owner.

Orr said the assessment should be completed within the next month, and may be ready for board approval by the Aug. 9 meeting.

    Within reason, whatever it takes to bridge gap. What happened to idea of naming rights for sports complexes?

    HPISD should consider solar panels on the roofs as well.
