Who Cooks a Mean Chicken-Fried Steak?

I just found out that Bradford Pearson has lived in the Lone Star State for nearly a year without having a chicken-fried steak pass his lips (and subsequently punch him in the gut). This situation needs to be remedied. Where should I take him for a quality CFS?

Tillman’s CFS is pretty aggressive and you get the awkward table top dance as an entertainment bonus.

If you have 2 hours to go to Strawn, Texas, Mary’s is well worth the drive. Get the small or medium. The large takes up 2 plates. Coldest beer in the State and the best Rocky Mountain Oysters I’ve had yet.

Locally – try Celebration or, as Avid Reader recommends, Tillman’s.

    Good luck choosing one!

Bubba’s has delicious CFS; love their chicken strips and chicken livers, too.

Before it closes down to be replaced by yet another MiCo (in February 2012?), take him to Matt’s in Lakewood and order the chicken fried steak “tampequino” style. And a root beer. No foolin’.

So many good choices, but the one I had recently at All Good Cafe in Deep Ellum was excellent.

The men in my family love Ozona Chicken Fried Steak. If you wait until the weather is mild I like sitting outside there.

Agree with Zaner…Matt’s or Mattito’s for the Mexican chicken-fried steak. It’s served with green chile sauce and a bit of melted cheese. The hand-crafted crust is a thing of beauty. Start the meal with some Bob Armstrong queso and chase the whole thing with a couple of Lipitors. A quintessential Dallas experience that melds the food porn that is good Tex-Mex with the down-home weirdness of covering a steak in flour and frying it.

Tillman’s in Oak Cliff, hands down.
    Chicken Fried Hanger Steak.

Do NOT take him to Tillman’s first. It will spoil him and keep him from enjoying CFS in any other place. Start him off at Good Eats so he knows what a classic CFS dinner looks like. Then, Zaner and mk are soooo right, take him to Matt’s for Tampiqueno style before it closes. And get the Bob Armstrong.
