My Two Cents For School Publicists

Highland Park ISD conducted seminars today for the various campuses’ publicity chairs. I can’t speak to what was covered, since I wasn’t there. But if I had been, here’s what I would have contributed:

– Photos reproduce well in the paper when they’re at least 1 MB and/or 300 dpi.
– Some contributors embed photos in an email and put a caption beneath each photo. I prefer the contributors who send the photos as numbered attachments, then give me a list of captions that are numbered to correspond to the pics. That makes it much easier to keep track of who’s who.
– If you want a photographer to be credited by name, please tell me; we’re happy to do it. If you’d rather the photos be published without a credit, that’s fine too.
– The best email address to use is editor@peoplenewspapers.com. I inherited it from my predecessor, and my successor will inherit it from me one day.
– If you want my attention, don’t email or call on a Wednesday. That’s the day we send the paper to the press. On Wednesdays, I barely take calls from my wife, much less the general public.

I hope that helps. Please keep those contributions pouring in. The only reason we won’t publish them ASAP is a lack of space. When I took this job, then-editor Jason Heid told me every Park Cities resident should be able to pick up any issue of Park Cities People and see a face or name they recognize. That’s still my goal each week, and it can’t be accomplished without your help.

Good tips, Dan. Good meeting, helpful and informative. And to the point. Love that.

    Dan– what’s a 1MB or 300 dpi?
I might have to send some pictures in and I have no idea what you are talking about.I have figured out the jpeg though.
    Thanks.

One one the girl scouts in my troop submitted information on our troop’s silver award and you never replied or printed it. She sent the information in a very organized way yet you didn’t even acknowledge it. Why? Very disappointing.
