Assistant Band Director Dismissed

John Gurke – an assistant band director at Highland Park High School — was dismissed during a special HPISD Board of Trustees meeting Thursday evening.

After a brief closed session, the trustees announced that Gurke was being dismissed because he “does not hold a valid certificate to teach in the state of Texas.”

No additional details were given.

    The band seems like a revolving door. This percussion guy was well-liked. He’s taught in a handful of N.TX school districts. Hard to believe none noticed he didn’t have a teaching certificate. Perhaps each was a provisional appointment, or perhaps he recently lost his certificate. Got to be more to this story.
