UIL Places Dearman On Probation For Year

Highland Park volleyball head coach Michael Dearman was issued a public reprimand and has been placed on probation for one year by the University Interscholastic League after being ejected from a recent match.

The Lady Scots (27-6, 6-0) will take on Forney in a 7 p.m. home match on Friday to wrap up the first half of District 10-4A play. Highland Park is ranked No. 7 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 4A state poll.

Dearman led Highland Park to a state runner-up finish in 2008.

    I am curious too. What happened? What does probation mean? Does he get to continue to coach?

    Apparently, our coach took an extra-long time-out. After repeated whistles and requests to have his team return to the court, the official issued an unnecessary delay (which is another time-out). As you saw (if you were there) our coach became irate, started yelling at the official and stepped onto the court while still berating the official. As a long time volleyball fan, this is not only unprofessional but also considered unsporting conduct. The official had seen enough and ejected him. After watching many of our games, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner.

    Coach Dearman should not have been ejected and did not deserve to be placed on probation. It is my understanding that the referee even admitted to UIL that he had made the wrong call. It appears that UIL is using a high profile coach to show how much power they can wield. The community needs to stand behind Coach Dearman. In fact, let’s pack the stands and give him a standing ovation tonight when they introduce him at the varsity game!

    Not quite the entire story- This “Official” (I use the term loosely) was not supposed to be officiating at any of our games because of his past unprofessional conduct. So there was tension from the onset of the games. He actually called Mr Kelly the next day to say that he was at fault. It was all unfortunate and hopefully will not happen again.

    How about it, PCP, there seems to be a story here either way. If ref was wrong, that’s great. Was up to Coach to hold his temper though. Why would the ref call Kelly? He’s not the Athletic Director. If the ref admitted he was wrong, could HP have filed a complaint with the UIL? So far, this is only half the story–especially since there seems to be such a wide variety of opinion amongst spectators.

    Would be interested in the details here. If the ref was wrong, so be it, but coaches need to remain professional. Having watched him in previous years, I not surprised. I’ve seen him get angry before with both players and refs when things don’t go HP’s way.

    As noted by the “you may also like” section… not the first time a HP coach is on probation. Doesnt seem to affect them. Agree with NFW – why would a ref call the principal?

    And dont we send all coaches to that Positive Coaching school???
