AUSTIN — As the wrestling season was getting started back in November, Highland Park freshman Nick Reenan told Scots assistant coach Cliff Prier that he was going to go 50-0.

“He sat down and tallied up all of the possible matches,” Prier said. “I was like, ‘Sure, Nick.’ ”

Sure enough, Reenan made his prophecy a reality on Saturday as he capped a perfect season in the 152-pound division to become Highland Park’s first individual state wrestling champion since 2007. He was also named the Class 4A Wrestler of the Year. The only downside for Reenan was the amount of time the three-day meet took.

“It’s exciting,” Reenan said. “I like it. I was ready for it. Waiting for the matches to come up took a long time. I really wanted to just go out there and wrestle. I thought there would be a lot less waiting around.”

Reenan dominated all of his opponents, beating Frisco’s Taylor Irwin, 17-2; Boys Ranch’s Cody Hunsaker, 9-0; Carrollton Creekview’s Isaac Salinas, 17-2; and Trophy Club Byron Nelson’s Kody Collins (Pin, 3:31) in the finals to cap his 50-0 season.

“He’s something else, to say the least,” said Scots head coach Tony Warren, who was named the Class 4A Coach of the Year. “He’s got a ton of experience and a mat awareness you don’t see in a lot of people. He’s confident and all of that stuff. He’s got an opportunity to do some special things. Hopefully, they’ll take care of the Olympics in 2020, and maybe he’ll have a chance to be there.”

He also helped the Scots, who did not even have a regional qualifier last season, finish third in the team standings with 76.5 points. Canyon Randall won the 4A team title with 95 points, followed by Frisco with 88 points.
