The traditional decathlon might be physically exhausting, but the academic decathlon is just as taxing mentally, trading skin-tight leotards for stylish business attire.

So it’s a pretty significant accomplishment for the Highland Park High School academic decathlon team to return to state competition year after year.

This year’s team finished third in the team standings at a regional competition on Jan. 24-25 in Rowlett, and will travel to the state meet on Feb. 21-23 in San Antonio. If it places in the top two among the 17 schools there, the team earns a trip to Hawaii for nationals this spring.

Among the individual champions for HP at regionals were Alex Brennan (varsity math), William Lake (honors math), Beren Davidson (varsity science), and Tyler Bierschenk (scholastic social science). Find a complete list of medalists here.
