Lady Scots to Start Playoffs Tonight
The Highland Park girls basketball team will try to embrace the underdog role tonight.
The Lady Scots (17-9), who finished in third place in District 10-4A, will meet 9-4A runner-up The Colony (18-9) in a Class 4A Region II bi-district playoff game at 7 p.m. at McKinney North.
The winner will face either Bryan Adams or Molina in the area round later this week.
It will be the third straight postseason appearance for HP, which fell to Frisco Heritage in the first round last year.
The Lady Scots clinched their playoff spot in part because of a forfeit victory last Tuesday in the regular-season finale against Terrell, which didn’t have enough players for the game.
HP hasn’t won consecutive games since Jan. 14, but has shown remarkable balance on offense this season. Katie Thiebaud averages 10.9 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Alex Reynolds averages 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds. Meanwhile, Caroline McDaniel contributes 9.2 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.8 steals per game.
The Lady Cougars enter the matchup with more momentum, having won six straight games to close the regular season. They have limited opponents to 45 or fewer points in their last nine contests, including a 45-29 thrashing of Little Elm on Tuesday.
Jade Williams, a 6-foot-3 freshman, leads The Colony in scoring this season with 14.5 points per game. The Lady Cougars are making their sixth straight playoff appearance, and advanced to the Class 4A Region II semifinals a year ago.
