Portables Will Return to UP Elementary

The Highland Park ISD Board of Trustees is still crafting a master facilities plan to deal with long-term “enrollment pressure,” as Superintendent Dawson Orr termed it at last night’s meeting. But, in the short term, the district has to take steps to deal with its growing student body.

One of those steps will be placing two portable classrooms on the campus of University Park Elementary this fall. But erase that stereotypical image of portables from your mind. The district’s architects at SHW Group are working on a way to make the classrooms a physical extension of the permanent building, rather than simply plopping them nearby.

At Armstrong, an additional classroom will be gained by moving video technology back to the auditorium.

At Bradfield, where two more traditional classrooms are needed, the plan is to convert a computer lab and an “intervention space” used for one-on-one instruction.

And at Hyer, the school will get two more classrooms by A) dividing a large room and B) converting space used for special education.
