That melodic mix of brass, woodwinds, and percussion that you heard throughout University Park on Saturday morning? It was none other than the Highland Park Highlander Band parading through the streets as part of its inaugural “March-a-Thon 5K” fundraiser.

The band, along with the flag corps, twirlers, and others, marched from the high school down McFarlin Boulevard to Snider Plaza and back, with well-wishers cheering and donating along the route. Half Shells Oyster Bar & Grill provided water at the halfway point.

Now the band turns its attention to its fall marching show, for which it has practiced for about seven hours a day in the August heat. The show, entitled “Stained Glass,” is more theatrical and elaborate than in years past, and will be unveiled during a “Sneak Peek” performance at 8 p.m. Friday at Highlander Stadium.
