Mavs Man Visits Armstrong

Mavs Man teaches Parker Stephens how to spin a basketball on his finger during a visit to Armstrong Elementary.
Keeping up with our weekly obsession of all things basketball, Mavs Man stopped by Armstrong Elementary recently to show the kids some sweet moves, all while never revealing his true identity: University Park Mayor Dick Davis.
I’m sorry you had to find out this way, but it’s true. Davis moonlights as Mavs Man.
(I threw in a bonus link to make it look better. See if you can spot it. It’s SFW, unless your boss hates wranglin’ and wrastlin’.)

Highland Park Basketball Star Arrested For Alleged DWI
David Matthew Allen was arrested for alleged DWI in University Park Saturday night, police reports indicate.
The 18-year-old was allegedly driving his black 2005 Chevy Tahoe in the 6300 block of Hillcrest Avenue when he struck a white 2007 BMW 325i, then fled the scene. After fielding a call from a resident who witnessed the incident, University Park police pulled Allen over in the 3800 block of Greenbrier. An officer allegedly smelled alcohol on the teen’s breath, and found vehicle damage consistent with the witness’ report.
Allen blew .115 and .122 in Intoxilyzer tests, a police affidavit states.
Allen averages 22 points for the Scots this year, and was ready to lead the team against Newman Smith tonight.
HPISD spokeswoman Helen Williams confirmed the report, then stated that the district’s extracurricular code of conduct would not allow “the player” to play in a game tonight. When discussing the school-sanctioned consequences for a DWI, Williams, citing the district’s privacy regulations, would not mention Allen specifically.
For the illegal consumption of alcohol (first offense), the code of conduct reads:
Suspension from current or nearest competitive season or activity for a minimum
of one week or 10% of the season, whichever is greater, up to a maximum of 3
weeks or 30% of the season, whichever is greater. If the Scots win tonight without Allen, he would also be suspended for Friday’s game against the winner of tonight’s Kimball-Hillcrest game, per the policy. Allen was also charged with duty on striking an unattended vehicle.

What’s in a (Always-Changing, Semi-Relevant) Name?

I was driving on Lovers Lane yesterday afternoon when I spotted this bumper sticker. It’s for the 2012 Highland Park track team.I see these stickers a lot, for every HP team. And I think they’re cool; I really do. I just have a few logistical questions.

The Many Faces of NorthPark Center
I spent the better half of my Saturday afternoon at NorthPark, though, to be honest, it was my fault. I got my fiancee a birthday present, and it didn’t fit. Probably should’ve done some more reconnoissance.
While we were there, we saw one of the greatest cross-sections of humanity I’ve ever encountered, save for a Jimmy Buffett concert.
They included:
- The man on the couch in JCrew using a woman’s hair claw (from an in-store display) to comb his own hair. He was also wearing pink pants.
- The man standing in the restroom, combing his hair (this is a common theme), while eating a large pile of the free bread from La Madeleine. He was well-dressed (read: not homeless).
- The woman wearing a surgical mask. I understand people may rag on me for this one, but you have to admit it’s a bit jarring when you see it. She had a very Contagion feel.
- Two men, freestyling in the courtyard, in the rain. They weren’t terrible, but needed all the practice time they could get.

SMU Staggers Through 28 Point Game
The SMU men’s basketball team stumbled to new lows last night, scoring only 28 points in their 47-28 loss to UAB.
The point total is the lowest in Conference USA history, topping (?) the 36 point output by UAB in a 2002 game against Southern Miss, according to ESPN. It was the lowest point total for the Mustangs since the inception of the shot clock, and the second lowest since 1950, bested (again, ?) only by a 26-point outburst against TCU in 1956.
A few months back, I questioned how long Matt Doherty could stay on the Hilltop. A performance like this can’t help his case.

UP Community League Endorses Council Candidates
The University Park Community League announced its endorsements for mayor and council today, with few surprises:
- Mayor: Dick Davis
- Councilmembers: Tommy Stewart, Bob Begert, Bob Clark (incumbents), and Dawn Moore.
“We’re very pleased that these experienced and active University Park residents will run for elected office to serve the citizens of University Park,” said Fred Hamm, chairman of the Community League. “The quality of these candidates reflects the depth of leadership available to serve in our great community. These highly qualified candidates with substantial records of city government and civic involvement should do a great job for our community upon their election.”
Dawn Moore is the lone newbie. She currently sits on the city’s planning and zoning committee, and has previously served on its legislative committee. For more about Moore, here’s her personal blog.
Councilman Jerry Grable is stepping down due to term limits, city spokesman Steve Mace said.

Mark Cuban Saves St. Patrick’s Day Parade
By now you’ve probably heard that Mark Cuban cut a check to keep the Greenville Avenue St. Patrick’s Day Parade afloat.
One of my boys at the Observer, Greg Howard, caught up with Cuban last night and asked him why.
“I thought it was unfair to the future generations,” Cuban said, “because they wouldn’t be able to kill as many brain cells as I did.”
That in mind, how many Park Cities folks head to the parade every year? Is it a young man’s game, or an East Dallas man’s game? It wouldn’t take long for lots of folks from University Park to walk over there; just wondering if any actually do.

A Lesson in Handicapped Etiquette
First off, I am not handicapped. Aside from a shattered toe in 10th grade, and a debilitating case of Lyme Disease in 8th grade, I’ve led a pretty healthy 27 years.
That said, the above photo was taken yesterday outside Amore in Snider Plaza. The car did have a handicapped placard, which brought a few conclusions to mind:
1. This is a person with a fake handicapped sticker, because a handicapped person could clearly not get in or out of that truck.
2. This is a driver with a handicapped passenger, in which case the driver (who probably owns a smaller, lower-to-the-ground car) should’ve been more thoughtful and not broken out the Ford F-350 for lunch.
3. This truck is so large that it has a telescoping ramp that slides in and out of the vehicle when the handicapped person needs to exit.
The answer is probably #1, though I’m holding out hope for #3.

Highland Park Makes Forbes’ “Affluent Neighborhoods” List
From April 2007 to December 2009, I had the pleasure of covering Bethesda and Chevy Chase, Maryland for The Gazette, a newspaper not wholly unlike Park Cities People.
While there, I was afforded the opportunity to mix and mingle with affluence, a skill that’s served me in my present gig as well. All of this is just an extended intro to say that Highland Park was named to Forbes’ Most Affluent Neighborhoods list this week, behind Chevy Chase and Somerset, Maryland, a small hamlet wedged between Bethesda and Chevy Chase.
Forbes writes:
The haughty section of Dallas, dotted with luxury homes that go for over a million dollars, on average. Someone has to pay Jerry Jones’ PSLs.
I like to think that my reporting has brought these towns (excuse me, “section[s] of Dallas”) into the limelight. Enjoy it while you can; I won’t be here forever.
