  • Hit-And-Run Victim Seeks Driver

Attention, parents of teenage drivers. If your son or daughter’s vehicle had some oddly explained damage on Saturday morning, Mike O’Neal would appreciate it if you contacted the University Park Police Department. On Friday night, at about 10:40 p.m., a hit-and-run driver plowed into O’Neal’s Toyota Avalon in the 3800 block of Centenary Avenue. The eastbound driver was speeding, and the Avalon was totaled. The vehicle in question likely has damage to its front end, on the passenger side.

  • MCA News Must Have Hit Mike Young Hard

Texas Rangers icon Michael Young routinely uses Beastie Boys tunes as his at-bat music. If the Rangers had been playing at home today, the day Adam “MCA” Yauch died, I’d like to think the University Park resident would have orchestrated a tribute like this.

  • Parish Episcopal Brings Gift to Highland Park Soda Fountain’s 100th Birthday Party

    image

Lots of people, myself included, enjoyed free milkshakes, grilled-cheese sandwiches, and jalapeno-pimento cheese crackers yesterday at Highland Park Soda Fountain’s 100th birthday party. But the only gift I noticed was this jar of licorice sent by Parish Episcopal School. I saw headmaster Dave Monaco among the well-wishers enjoying the snackage, so I assume he brought the present. Also spotted in the crowd were former Highland Park ISD Trustee Mike Boone and Dallas Stars Brenden Morrow and Stephane Robidas.

  • Carbone’s Decor Pays Tribute to ‘Goodfellas’

Julian Barsotti is the owner of Carbone's (Staff photo: Alana Harrison)

In today’s edition of Park Cities People, Georgia Fisher writes about Carbone’s, the new restaurant opened by Julian Barsotti this month in The Shops at Highland Park. See that painting of the old man with the two dogs? I immediately recognized it as the work of Tommy DeVito’s mother in Goodfellas. (Skip ahead to the 2:50 mark to see the painting, or just watch the entire 3-minute-and-20-second clip, because it’s a scene from one of the greatest movies ever made.)

  • Jim Hitzelberger is One Funny Dude

Last night, the lovely Karen Mordecai and I had the pleasure of attending the Highland Park High School Alumni Association Awards Dinner at Dallas Country Club. We were among several guests of honoree Pierce Allman, and I’m so thankful that Pierce invited us. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had a chance to enjoy the comedic stylings of Highland Park ISD Trustee Jim Hitzelberger, the evening’s emcee. Here are a few samples of his fine work:

When introducing 20 past honorees, Hitzelberger realized he had skipped Park Cities People co-founder Kirk Dooley. “That was not intentional,” he said, “although I’m still amazed you won this.”

Hitzelberger fondly recalled his first semester at Highland Park High School. After the first six weeks, he had four Fs and a D. When the school called Hitzelberger’s father to report these grades, his dad responded, “Apparently, he’s spending too much time on one class.”

He used to get this Awards Dinner gig by fielding a phone call from the Alumni Association on a Monday or a Tuesday, when he would be asked “What are you doing Thursday night?” Invariably, his answer would be “Nothing.” But a couple of years ago, he had to start calling his wife to ask “Honey, what am I doing Thursday night?” Invariably, her answer would be “Who is this?”

  • Wherever I Go, There’s Tincy Miller

In her attempt to regain her seat on the State Board of Education, Highland Park resident Geraldine “Tincy” Miller has blanketed the northern hinterlands with her oversized yard signs. On my commute through Richardson and Plano this morning, I saw her smiling face four times, at five times its actual size.
