Cheerleaders and Scotsmen Get Dozens to Abandon Diets
The Highland Park High School cheerleaders and Scotsmen closed out another successful Hamburger Supper last Friday night before the school’s homecoming triumph over Rockwall-Heath. Really, who could resist a burger from Jack’s served up by one of these smiling faces?
The spirit-filled teens want to thank sponsors Allie Beth Allman & Associates, Jack’s Burger House, Plaza Health Foods (hooray for yogurt!), and everyone who bought a ticket.

Do You Like UPPD? Show Them on Facebook
Want to scope out breaking news and really grainy photos of criminals? Then “like” the University Park Police Department on Facebook.
My favorite post is the arty photo of the double-parked police bicycle (above). Seriously, though, UPPD definitely has one-up on the Highland Park DPS. Their Facebook page is the digital equivalent of a ghost town.

Does Your Water Taste Funky?
Stinky water is often a seasonal problem, as lakes turn over and the funky stuff from the bottom of the lake makes it to your house before the folks at Park Cities Municipal Utility District can adjust the filtration system. But several park cities residents have reported weird tasting water in the past few days that wasn’t caused by a change at Lake Grapevine. If you were wondering why the water from your taps was less than refreshing, Larry McDaniel at PC MUD says it’s because the water plant is getting ready for the spiffy new filtration system.
For the full explanation, see McDaniel’s statement after the jump. You’re welcome.

Rise And Shine, Park Cities (8-3-11)
1. Yesterday, Charles provided visual evidence that, yes, it’s really hot outside. While several Park Cities residents abandon our fair burg for cooler climes, the rest of us are hurrying between air-conditioned spaces. If you and your brood want to stay cool on the cheap, head over to NorthPark Center for Andy Mason’s “Folk Rock For Kids” presentation at 10:30 a.m.. And maybe indulge in a little retail therapy to take the edge off the heat, too.
2. Want to stay even cooler? Tell someone about our openings for fall internships. All the info is right cheer.
3. And while Friday Fellowship ended all the way back in May, the Highland Park Presbyterian Church knitting fellowship still meets every Friday like clockwork, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Want to learn to knit? These ladies would love to teach you.

Rise And Shine, Park Cities (7-27-11)
1. Thieves have had the Park Cities in their sights when it comes to stealing the third-row seats and wheels off of GMC SUVs and trucks, but it appears some criminals are becoming even more brazen. In Rockwall, a group targeted an entire dealership, stealing the wheels and tires off of 35 GMC Yukons and pickups. Say you’re due to replace your Yukon or Tahoe — will these thefts keep you from getting the newest version of the ultimate mom-mobile?
2. Rosemary Rumbley will close out this summer’s Rejebian series tonight with a presentation on My Thoughts Be Bloody, the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth and his rivalry with his more accomplished brother, Edwin. As always, Rejebian reviews start at 7 p.m. in Wesley Hall.
3. It’s never too early to learn how to maximize your chances at getting into your first-choice college. To that end, Highland Park High School is hosting a college application workshop for rising seniors at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Rise And Shine, Park Cities (7-20-11)
1. It’s not even August and I’m already seeing advertisements for back-to-school sales, and two-a-day practices are about to start picking up. If you’re trying to keep the first day of school from creeping up on you (HINT: It’s August 22), check out HPISD’s calendar. You’re welcome.
2. Julie Alexander will discuss Thomas E. Alexander’s book Stanley Marcus: The Relentless Reign of a Merchant Prince at tonight’s second-to-last installment of Highland Park United Methodist Church’s summer Rejebian series. The talk starts at 7 p.m. in Wesley Hall.
3. It’s hot outside, but that doesn’t mean you’re just lounging in the air-conditioned comfort of your home, right? If you’re out and about at your kids’ summer functions, remember to snap a few photos and email them to editor@peoplenewspapers.com. Your kids just might make it on the cover, which would be awesome, right?

Dallas’ Last Borders to Shutter
In fact, all Borders will close after the bookseller failed to find a buyer. The last Borders in Dallas — in Old Town off of Lovers Lane — will close, and all of their merchandise will be liquidated starting Friday.
When the Borders in the Preston Oaks Shopping Center closed, it left a very temporary hole soon filled by Central Market. I wonder what will fill the space in Old Town, which is a pretty heavily trafficked area at the corner of Greenville Avenue and Lovers.
Any theories? Wild speculation? Comments are open.
