On Nov. 3, former Boston Celtics player Chris Herren spoke to a room full of Dallasites at the annual CARE Breakfast. Ellen and Clayton Kershaw served as honorary chairs.

Guests listened to Chris Herren’s story of being raised a “hometown hero” back in Massachusetts and rising to early fame with the Celtics before hitting rock-bottom with substance abuse and recovering afterward. His book, Basketball Junkie, details the same narrative.

Highland Park’s Sgt. Lance Koppa was also in attendance with HPHS students who had participated in CARE events such as Red Ribbon Week.

Altogether, the event raised $220,000 for CARE and the assistance they provide for those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.
