A pair of masked men, one of whom was wielding a knife, robbed an elderly Highland Park couple in their driveway on Friday evening.
According to an incident report supplied by the Highland Park Department of Public Safety, the couple pulled into their driveway in the 3600 block of Stratford Avenue at about 9:20 p.m., after having dinner at the Dallas Country Club. The wife got out of the car and was standing up, with the help of a cane, when she felt someone grab her by her right shoulder and by the straps of the purse she was holding in her left hand. Meanwhile, the second robber put a 6-inch knife to the husband's chest before he could even get out of the car.
Perhaps because such robberies are so rare in Highland Park, the husband and wife both assumed they were being pranked by one of their sons. When ordered to hand over her purse and jewelry, the wife responded, "Like hell I will," and reached for the robber's mask. That's when he pushed her and took the purse.
The husband similarly refused to give up his wallet and jewelry. When the robber said, "I'll stab you if you don't," the husband replied, "That's enough of this [excrement]," and shut the car door. The husband assumes he slammed the door on the robber's hand, because he heard the robber cry out in pain before he and his accomplice fled on foot.
The robbers made off with the wife's Chanel purse which contained her Coach wallet and iPhone. The wallet held $100 cash, five credit cards, and her driver's license. Police advised her to cancel all of the cards, and they used an app to locate her phone at an apartment complex off of Interstate 45 in South Dallas.
