  • Whoops

Not sure where my brain was when I wrote in my football game story on the Highland Park-Everman contest for today’s Park Cities People that the Scots have not lost a non-district game since 2004. As a reader pointed out to me a minute ago, the Scots lost to Coppell in a non-district game last season.

Not real sure how I could have forgotten that game last season, seeing as how it wasn’t even quite a year ago, but I somehow managed. My bad.

  • Get Your Kids’ Mug in Our Pages

Fifth-graders from the PC-TAG program were treated to an ice cream social before the start of school.

One of the best parts of my job is also one of the easiest and most rewarding: Publishing photos of kids having fun.

Kids love seeing their photos in the paper, parents love seeing their kids in the papers, and organizations like schools and Scouts love the free promotion — it’s win-win-win.

Now that school’s in full swing, don’t forget to send us your photos from events and meetings to editor (at) peoplenewspapers (dot) com.

If spotted or if you think it might be him, PLEASE call 911.

  • In Case You Can’t Make it to Highlander…

As your trusty sports editor, I feel like it’s my duty to keep you apprised of all of the sports happenings that have a Park Cities connection.

In case you can’t make it to the Highland Park-Monterrey (Mexico) Tec game at Highlander Stadium tomorrow night, where I will be, you could mosey out to the Cotton Bowl and check out the Lingerie League season opener between the Dallas Desire and the San Diego Seduction. After all, Dallas only has two home games in the brutally-long four-game season.

The Park Cities tie? Word is the Desire have been practicing at Germany Park and at Goar Park. Has anybody out there been fortunate enough to witness this?

  • HP’s Night Out Event Scheduled for Oct. 5

One of the most effective ways of keeping crime at bay is getting to know your neighbors. So it’s a good thing that Highland Park DPS and the Highland Park Crime Watch have teamed up with Highland Park Village to bring neighbors and businesses together for the town’s first-ever Night Out event on Oct. 5.

But the event won’t put itself together, that’s for sure. If you or your business is interested in volunteering for HP’s Night Out, get in touch with Detective Marty Nevil at mnevil@hpdps.org or via phone at 214-559-9487. The committee for the event has a couple of open spots, so if you’ve got a knack for organizing, they could use your help!

If you want to become a member of HP Crime Watch, you can sign up on their website or e-mail info@hpcrimewatch.org for more information.

  • Scots Move Up To No. 6 After Win

Following Saturday’s 27-21 victory over Everman, the Highland Park Scots jumped up from No. 9 to No. 6 in the latest Associated Press Class 4A state poll.

The top three spots — Lake Travis, Aledo, and Brenham — remained the same. Denton Ryan moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 following its 28-14 win over Sulphur Springs.

Kerrville Tivy is No. 5, while Smithson Valley, Friendswood, Tyler John Tyler, and Stephenville round out the top 10.

The Scots take on Monterrey (Mexico) Tec in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Highlander Stadium.

  • The Kissing Valet. Walk or Engage?

I received an e-mail from a reader who has had enough of the overly friendly valet who kisses every woman exiting her car at his hot-spot restaurant stand in Highland Park Village. We’re not in France, Buster. And we don’t like to walk in the heat from a far away locale sportin’ luncheon heels either.

Faced with this dilemna do you choose the kiss or the walk? Remember, the kiss is a double cheek with an extended linger and based on car door angle and the valet’s rapid approach, there’s rarely a duck and bolt opp. I’m goin’ with the walk.

Oct. 1 is the deadline for fiscal 2011 budgets, which means a flurry of meetings between now and then. Tomorrow, the Highland Park Independent School District will have its annual public hearing on the district’s proposed budget starting at 5 p.m. in the MIS 5/6 assembly room.

A breakdown of proposed budget amendments is on the district’s website here.

  • Dave Bliss, Poster Boy of Lost Virtues, to Speak at HPUMC

I still remember the lead article when basketball coach Dave Bliss was exposed for a host of transgressions, the culmination of which was a smear campaign against murdered player Patrick Dennehy.

It read “Baylor Couldn’t Even Cheat Its Way to Mediocrity.”

    Ouch.

Seven years later, I like to think we’ve escaped the shadows of Bliss and mediocrity. The men’s team made it to the Elite 8 this year, and overall our athletic teams have performed well, save for the injury-plagued football season.

In the past few years, when articles and sportscasts mentioned Baylor, they rarely mentioned Bliss. It appeared an introduction to my Baptist alma mater was finally not followed by a laundry listing of heinous crimes such as extortion, witness tampering, and murder.

It looks like Baylor’s no longer the only one trying to reinvent itself.

Bliss will be interviewed at Highland Park United Methodist Church at 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Sunday as part of Rev. Paul Rasmussen’s series on “Lost Virtues.”

    Talk about a poster boy.

Bliss, widely regarded as the Judas of Baylor, should have plenty to say on the topic.
