Whoops
Not sure where my brain was when I wrote in my football game story on the Highland Park-Everman contest for today’s Park Cities People that the Scots have not lost a non-district game since 2004. As a reader pointed out to me a minute ago, the Scots lost to Coppell in a non-district game last season.
Not real sure how I could have forgotten that game last season, seeing as how it wasn’t even quite a year ago, but I somehow managed. My bad.

In Case You Can’t Make it to Highlander…
As your trusty sports editor, I feel like it’s my duty to keep you apprised of all of the sports happenings that have a Park Cities connection.
In case you can’t make it to the Highland Park-Monterrey (Mexico) Tec game at Highlander Stadium tomorrow night, where I will be, you could mosey out to the Cotton Bowl and check out the Lingerie League season opener between the Dallas Desire and the San Diego Seduction. After all, Dallas only has two home games in the brutally-long four-game season.
The Park Cities tie? Word is the Desire have been practicing at Germany Park and at Goar Park. Has anybody out there been fortunate enough to witness this?

Kerrville Tivy is No. 5, while Smithson Valley, Friendswood, Tyler John Tyler, and Stephenville round out the top 10.
The Scots take on Monterrey (Mexico) Tec in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Highlander Stadium.

Daryl “Moose” Johnston Discusses Concussions on Tuesday
Former Cowboy Daryl “Moose” Johnston will present “Rebound and Recovery Concussion Discussion” at the Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas at Dallas on Tuesday.
“With sports programs gearing up across the country, it’s important that parents, teachers, coaches and other adult supervisors understand concussions and how to handle them should a child or teen they know experience one,” said Johnston. “People immediately think of football when they think of concussions but other sports such as soccer and activities like cheerleading are potential environments for head injuries.”

Stafford Feeling Media Love
As he prepares for his second season in the NFL, Detroit Lions quarterback and former Highland Park Scot Matthew Stafford is getting plenty of attention.
Check out this really solid story from Yahoo Sports. Stafford also was part of a big story about the evolution of the Texas high school football quarterback in this month’s Texas Monthly.
Scots fans will get the chance to see Stafford play in person this season when the Lions visit the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 21.

Win Tickets to the Aug. 24 Rangers Game
I bet you’re wondering, considering the last couple of Rangers match-ups, if it really is “time.”You can ponder that at the Aug. 24 game at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington (also known as Cliff Lee’s sauna), courtesy of us and including parking pass, if you can riddle me this in the comments area below:
While Nolan Ryan has the most no-hitters of any player in the history of the MLB, the first Texas Rangers no-hitter was pitched by ________________.

Lady Scots Break Into Top 10
After not being ranked in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 4A preseason state poll, Highland Park moved into the No. 7 spot in the new poll after a solid opening week of action. District 10-4A rival Pearce is ranked No. 2.
The Lady Scots got the season started with wins over Lake Highlands and Red Oak in a home dual last Tuesday night. Highland Park then went 5-2 in the Duncanville Tournament of Champions, beating Houston Clear Springs, Stephenville, Arlington Martin, Arlington, and Keller, and falling to Magnolia and Houston Clear Lake.
Highland Park (7-2) plays at Plano West at 6:30 tonight. The Lady Scots will be in the Byron Nelson Tournament later this week.

Are You on Team Blondes or Team Brunettes?

Photos: Marco Antonio Medina; Trading cards: Kristen Sheffield
I had the pleasure of meeting several of the Highland Park High School graduates who will be playing in Saturday’s third annual Blondes vs. Brunettes football game. We profiled four of them — two blondes, two brunettes — via trading cards in this week’s paper. The profiles of the others I met, who all happened to be brunettes, are below.

Howeth Named Starting Quarterback
Highland Park head coach Randy Allen said on Tuesday that senior Jake Howeth will be the team’s starting quarterback, but that junior Brady Burgin will also see some playing time for the Scots.
“We have a package for Brady, and we have a package for Jake,” Allen said. “We put them in their strenghts so that we present some real different problems for the defense when they go in.”
Allen said the biggest advantage to rotating quarterbacks is he will be more willing to let Howeth run. In the past, Allen said, he would hold back running the quarterback until the playoffs.
“That’s what we’re starting with,” Allen said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll stick with it. That’s what my thinking is going into the first ballgame.”‘
Luke Woodley has been the team’s starter the last two seasons.
