  • UP Council to Vote on Fee Changes Tonight

The University Park City Council is expected to approve a series of fee changes for city services at tonight’s meeting.

The changes include increases in animal impound fees and tree removal fines, and a slight decrease for larger parties at the city pool.

Find all of the changes here. Meeting starts at 5 p.m., but don’t be late: the fee schedule changes are the only item on the main agenda.

  • Recovery Fund Established For Glenwick Residents Displaced By Monday’s Fire

A fire recovery fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank to help the tenant of the fire, who was uninsured. To donate, visit any Wells Fargo and use either of these account names: Pinedo Fire Recovery Fund or Account No. 9017295040.

While I was at the scene, UP Fire Chief Randy Howell said, “This is something I’ve seen with this community: they rally around and provide assistance.”

Let’s help those words ring true.

  • Be Careful if You’re in Snider Plaza

You don’t really need to be, but an unusual series of crimes struck the pleasant plaza this past week:

    APRIL 18 WEDNESDAY

Between 2:30 and 3 p.m., a woman attempted to cash a forged check at a shop in the 7000 block of Snider Plaza.

    APRIL 21 SATURDAY

At 11 p.m., a Rowlett resident let someone sit in her silver 2007 Honda Civic, parked in the 6600 block of Snider Plaza. The victim told the suspect that he could not drive the vehicle. The victim left, and the suspect stole the $10,000 vehicle.

    APRIL 23 MONDAY

Between noon and 5:30 p.m., a burglar broke into an unknown vehicle in the 6600 block of Snider Plaza and stole a $200 GPS and a $75 radio.

So, don’t let people sit in your Honda.

  • Car Flips on Milton Early Sunday Morning

    Photo: Chris Scifres

A car flipped at the intersection of Milton and Hursey early Sunday morning, and the driver fled before University Park Police could arrive, witnesses said.

The BMW SUV allegedly hit a parked vehicle and flipped onto its side. The driver then got out of the vehicle and ran away.

Police attempted to make contact with the man, but had not by Sunday morning, witnesses said. More on this as I figure it out.

  • Johnson Square Development Approved

Johnson Square, the proposed mixed-use development on the east side of University Park, was approved by the city council last night.

The project is on the east side of North Central Expressway, and is expected to include 240 apartments and ground-level retail. For more, pick up Friday’s Park Cities People.

  • All Park Cities Candidates Sticking to Low Budgets

The deadline to file campaign finance documents for Highland Park and University Park mayoral and council elections was April 12, but the date came and went with no filings.

That’s because all candidates in both municipalities have elected for modified reporting, which limits their campaign spending to less than $500, according to HP town secretary Gayle Kirby and UP city secretary Liz Spector. As soon as a candidate passes that threshold, they’re required to file a full finance report.

If anyone does that, you’ll be the first to know. Well, technically I guess I’ll be one of the first to know, then I’ll let you know. Either way, you’ll know pretty quickly.

  • UP Council to Decide Fate of High-Rise Tonight

With one development project still at least two months away from landing on their desks, the University Park City Council will take up a planned apartment complex at tonight’s meeting.

The project, on the east side of North Central Expressway, could be up to 80 feet tall, and accomodate 240 apartments. The land is currently zoned for a 20-story, 425,000 square-foot commercial building, so the approval of the apartment building would be a considerable decrease.

For all the zoning documents, head to the city’s website.
