Last Tuesday, community members and key players with the future Moody Family YMCA broke ground on the Preston Road site. Though demolition was completed quickly, recent rains have left the project roughly 18 days behind — but now that things are drying up, crews are ready to make up for it.

“We had so much rain, some folks thought we had actually built a pool,” board chair John Palms said.

A number of city officials and YMCA employees or contractors were in attendance to celebrate, in addition to longtime community members. With demolition done, excavation and site utilities are the next steps in the project, which will progress through August 2016. A website with construction updates can be found here.

Though much of the project is funded, there’s still plenty to do in the fundraising respect — and that means plenty of remaining naming opportunities. Roughly $17 million out of $28 million has been raised.

“There are many committees and individuals that are responsible for this success,” Will Beecherl, capital campaign co-chair, said. “I hope our community will appreciate the commitment the Y has made to us by moving forward with the construction of this new building.”
