Highland Park Crew, a rowing club comprised of students from HPHS and other high schools, is always inviting us to come out to one of their practices. So we took them up on the offer, with one condition: allow reporter Georgia Fisher to join the club for a day. That’s her on the left. Read about her humbling experience in this week’s Park Cities People.

RAPTOR will keep the bad guys out, and now new doors at all Highland Park ISD campuses will keep kids inside in case of an emergency.

The district’s board of trustees approved a $770,000 expenditure last night to pay for new interior doors and door hardware so that, when campuses go on lockdown, rooms inside buildings can remain secure. It’s called “secure-in-place,” and can help keep students and staff safe in the event of an intruder.

At last night’s Highland Park ISD board of trustees meeting, Superintendent Dawson Orr addressed concerns about the scheduled Highland Park High School gym remodel.

“The scenario we were dealing with is how do we accommodate all of the program needs at the same time you’re taking major space out,” Orr said.

Before any real work can be done, asbestos has to be removed, and that can take several weeks. Before that can happen, the district needs the facility for AP testing. According to Orr’s figures, around 50 percent of HPHS students take AP tests, something that is a great source of pride in the district.

Trustee Jeff Barnes asked parents and students at the meeting to bear with them. “We’re doing the best we can,” he said.

According to Helen Williams, the district’s communications director , the gym will be closed throughout the summer and during the first week of the 2010-11 school year.
