School may be (almost) out for summer, but that doesn’t mean that your little ones should stop practicing their reading. Last week I chatted with Carol Ann Luby, the vice president of membership for the University Park Library, and she shared an interesting fact with me: children can lose two to three brain levels in reading during the summer time if they don’t do it regularly. As a child I spent my summers enrolled in Hyer’s book club, and I credit it as one of the reasons I love reading so much (shout out to Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Shuford). Are you looking for something similar to enroll your little ones in? Here are the details on the summer reading programs at the UP and HP libraries.

Are your little ones competitive? Then the University Park Library has the perfect book club for them. Kiddos will compete against each other – making reading not only an educational activity, but an exciting competition. You can register your babes at Caruth Park on June 8th or at the library.

For kiddos who live in Highland Park, the HP Library is kicking off the summer reading season with a celebration at Prather Park on June 7th at 10:30 a.m. Lizza Conner, local children’s musician, will be there to perform.

By all accounts, tonight’s storm could get big.

HPISD just sent out a note about the possibility of a tornado warning (we’re currently just in “watch” status), in which case doors will be locked and students won’t be able to leave for the time being. Seems like standard protocol for a school district, but it’s worth a heads-up.

Per the email:

If the tornado watch is upgraded to a tornado warning, our campuses will shelter in place. If that occurs, doors will be locked and staff members and students will be situated away from windows and doors, so parents and others authorized to pick up students will not be able to do so while the warning is in place. Due to the dangerous conditions during a tornado warning and because the doors will be locked, we ask that parents not come to campus until the warning is lifted. Instead, please find shelter until the dangerous conditions have passed.

If a tornado warning occurs, we will communicate with parents and staff using our emergency text and e-mail notification system. We will also send a follow-up announcement when the warning is no longer in effect and children are cleared to leave campus.

The name of the game is catch and release, because we’re all animal lovers here. Don’t forget to bring your own pole and bait. If you catch the smallest or the largest fish, you’ll get a prize. If your luck gets you medium-sized fish, don’t be sad. There’s still door prizes to be won.

You can register at the event, or you can register ahead of time with the Parks Department at 214-987-5488. Happy fishing!

Located in Snider Plaza, this is their flagship location and the headquarters are located on site. The Impeccable Pig has now taken over the space Spicy II once occupied – making this their largest of ten stores spread across the South.

Funnily enough, The Impeccable Pig didn’t start out as a clothing boutique, but as a home goods store run by mother Laura. It wasn’t until Jennifer added a rack of clothing into the mix that they realized selling stylish clothing to Park Cities mommas and their brood was their true retail calling. While The Impeccable Pig typically only features their private label clothing line, this summer they’ll be featuring beachwear brand O’neill.

Have you stopped by The Impeccable Pig to check out their renovation?

Highland Park Village has added a concierge to its staff, and the shopping center’s management stole her from my staff. In this newly created position, Caitlin Adams will be in charge of coordinating events, assisting clients, writing for the Village’s blog and magazine, and working as a liaison between management, tenants, and customers.

Apparently, the top brass over there became enamored with Caitlin when she was interviewing some of them for a story. Well, that’s the last time I send a friendly face to that dump. In fact, we’re about to launch a series of investigative articles exposing the dark, seedy underbelly of Highland Park Village.

Kidding, kidding. We still love you, HPV, despite your awkward acronym. We love all of your tenants. And, most of all, we love your advertising revenue. Besides, thanks to his new position with the Republican National Committee, I’m pretty sure Ray Washburne could have me killed any time he wants.

As they say, every time a door closes, a window opens. Caitlin’s departure has allowed me to add another Highland Park High School graduate to our staff. The lovely and talented Margaux Anbouba joined the team this week, upping our Scots total to three. (The others are Elizabeth Ygartua and Dorothy Wood.) It’s nothing like the old days, when I believe 10 of the original 12 employees of Park Cities People were Highland Park alums, but I’ll take it.
