HP Girls Claim Another District Crown

It’s on to regionals for the Highland Park girls after winning the District 15-5A title. The boys also advanced to the regional meet.

The Highland Park girls continued their legacy of excellence in postseason cross country competition by winning the District 15-5A meet on Oct. 12 at Myers Park in McKinney.

It was the 39th district team title for the Lady Scots, and the first for freshman Sophia Oliai, who took the individual gold medal with a time of 18 minutes, 37 seconds.

The entire team will compete at the Class 5A Region II meet on Oct. 23 in Grand Prairie. The top athletes from that meet will advance to the state meet on Nov. 4 in Round Rock.

Fellow freshman Cameron Fawcett joined Oliai on the podium, crossing the finish line in 19:11 to earn a bronze medal. All of the other HP runners placed in the top 20, including Maddy Stephens (fifth), Grace O’Keefe (seventh), Julia Helton (eighth), Gracyn Applegate (11th), and Annemarie Whalen (19th).

On the boys side, HP finished third in the team standings and advanced to regionals. Jack Alessio paced the Scots by placing ninth individually. The HP squad also included Reese Hathaway, Brett Jacot, Joseph Linck, Tyler Mead, Charlie Philbin, and Trevor Schillaci.
