Rangers Trade Young, UP Loses Resident
It was tough hearing the Texas Rangers had traded Michael Young. Not only had I lost my one of my favorite players, but University Park had potentially lost a great resident. I don’t know if he’s going to sell his house and move fully out to Philadelphia, but even the thought of it brings up all the history I’ve heard about his involvement in the community.
One story that stands out is how he visited Michael Malone, a seven-year-old UP boy who was diagnosed with a high-risk form of cancer. To me, Young’s actions embodied everything I wanted to be when I was trying to be a baseball player: strong work ethic, great character, and good moral sensibilities.
It seems Young had his poise all the way to the end of his long career with the Rangers. On Monday, he held his own press conference to wish his fans good bye. But that just seems like Mike. Ending a good tenure, on good terms.
I guess I should expected this but it still doesn’t well with me. Michael Young is a credit to the sport and was in my opinion a key player for the Texas Rangers over the years. I guess I want be needing my ball and sharpie on walks through UP anymore. Anyhow, I wish Michael the best with his new team.
Sad day for UP and for all Rangers fans. Class act in sports these days is rare, and Young is a big contributor to the community.
