While excessive rain turned the golf course into a muddy mess, it didn’t put a damper on the charitable efforts of this year’s Byron Nelson Championship.

The Salesmanship Club, which is the host organization for the PGA Tour event in Irving, said this week that the tournament raised more than $5.6 million in May for Momentous Institute, a Dallas nonprofit organization that provides education and therapeutic services to repair the social and emotional health of children.

Since the tournament began in 1968, it has raised $143 million for charity, and has consistently been among the top philanthropic events of its kind in the country.

“The heart of the AT&T Byron Nelson is its cause,” said Bill McClung, Momentous Institute board chairman. “These proceeds ensure that we can continue to provide direct services to kids in our community, while also expanding Momentous Institute’s reach even further, providing more opportunities for success to kids and families.”
