The accolades continue to accumulate for Highland Park quarterback John Stephen Jones, who won the prestigious Tom Landry Award on Monday.

The award honors the top high school football player in North Texas regardless of position or classification, as chosen by a panel of former coaches and players, along with media members.

After leading the Scots to the Class 5A Division I state title last year, Jones has put together one of the most impressive seasons for a Dallas-area quarterback in recent memory, having passed for almost 4,000 yards with 52 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He’s also rushed for nine scores entering Friday’s state semifinal showdown with Denton Ryan.

Jones, of course, is the grandson of Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys — the team that the award’s namesake coached for more than three decades.

Other finalists for the award included Ryan’s Spencer Sanders, McKinney’s Matthew Gadek, Mansfield Legacy’s Jalen Catalon, and DeSoto’s Byron Hanspard.
