Fuqua still Pursuing Plaza Parking Problems

After all of the big business during the Tuesday City Council meeting, perennial parking activist, Retail Advisory Board member, and Plaza Health Foods owner Max Fuqua addressed the council during the public comment period.

While he thanked the council for approving an amendment to the valet parking ordinance that would make all valets hang placards on cars they serve, he said the council still had a ways to go before fully addressing the issue of parking in the city’s busy commercial areas.

“This new ordinance is not going to be effective if there is not a parking enforcement officer to enforce it,” Fuqua said.

Of course, parking enforcement is a pretty raw subject when it comes to Snider Plaza (Have you tried parking there on Saturdays? It puts the “donk” in redonkulous!) .

“[Parking] is a very big quality of life issue for UP residents,” Fuqua said.

Valet parking is only a fragment of the bigger issue, which is enforcement. Namely, Fuqua said that the city’s parking woes are too much to saddle only one parking enforcement officer with.

“We need a second parking enforcement officer and we need to give the chief of police the manpower he needs to get the job done,” he said.

After the meeting, I asked Fuqua how long he’ll keep bringing up the parking issues in Snider Plaza.

“As long as it takes,” he said.

You know Charles, you can observe a lot by just watching. If people don’t want to come out to Snider Plaza, how are you going to stop them? Bada boom!
