Nice Job, Ladies

Let’s have two rounds of applause for two talented women.

First, Merritt Patterson returned to the pages of Park Cities People this week with a column that made me laugh out loud more than once. It’s about her first foray into “a parallel universe several blocks from the edge of Highland Park,” i.e. the gay bars on Cedar Springs. If you haven’t already read it, go pick up a copy.

And let’s hear it for graphic designer/podcast producer Valerie Wong, who created this Al Hirschfeld-style illustration of Merritt that we’ll be using with her column from now on. Valerie recently received a high-five (literally) from Wick Allison for such efforts.

Had to check the date on this entry to see if it was an April 1st joke, because, well, it goes directly from a reference to a gay bar safari to praising an image of–with all due apologies here–what looks like a string of anal beads being worn like a souvenir necklace. At least have the decency to leave Hirschfeld out of it.
