Friday night teenage boys were selling these horns at the entrance to the stadium, prior to Scots/Mexico Tech football game.

I can only speak for myself and all those around me, but we found them very disruptive and spoiled the home football game experience.  They also conflicted with the Highlander Band.

My husband and I were enjoying our new reserved seats and were shocked and annoyed by the horrible sound those annoying items made! We assumed some annoying kids brought them …. i am outraged we actually sold them! Perhaps they will not return for the next game ????……

Let the students enjoy cheering on their football team? It seems like a football game would be a great time to allow for a little obnoxiousness.

Have the Seniors circulate a “rumor” that they will be blowing said vuvuzelas at the next pep rally and see how long they last.

Personally, I can’t believe the vuvuzelas are any more annoying than the screaming middle school girls that get up and leave every 20 seconds. If we want to hear the band over the vuvuzelas, we need more band members.

I think the boys selling them are a pretty industrious lot. Don’t put yourselves in a knot. They are being outlawed everywhere else so it’s only a matter of time.

Just be glad you weren’t in the student section. The kid behind me was literally blowing the vuvuzela right in my ear. And it was impossible to hear anyone during the 1st quarter, but luckily several people seemed to get bored and so it was slightly better after that.

The vevuzelas played at the scots game were not only offensive to my African American race, but to every young believer of the teachings of Malcolm X and Dr King worldwide. The instruments should be banned along with the name-calling towards the African American players on the opposite team. My grandfather always told me not to let the ignorance of inferior beings bring me down, but this vevuzela blowing has gotten to the point where lives are being lost and the virtues in which we live by and follow everyday are being destroyed simply because 21st century caucausion males think they have the right to do whatever they feel is morally acceptable in the country that was practically discovered by African Americans. My ancestors did not travel across the oceans in a crammed wooden boat towards this country that should have the decency to respect the thoughts of other races just to be violated and abused like a fly. So, America, think twice before you make a sorry attempt at lowering my peoples’ self esteem. That is all.

Those of you who are complaining really need to cut it out. The vuvuzelas are going to stay at the games. Our administration has nothing wrong with them and the football team loves them. if you dont like them dont come, we dont care and id rather not have a bunch of people complaining about noise at a football game; wear earphones if you want. And for you Reggie your comment makes zero sense, the vuvuzelas were made for the South American national team by the people of South Africa in order to show pride for their nation, if you honestly think that this has anything to do about race I may God have mercy on your soul because you are sorely mistaken. We got the idea to blow the horns this summer while watching the world cup, and thought it would bring a great tradition and asset to our student section at the games.

Alright first off Reggie Nagel I think you have read into this a bit too much. Me and my friends sold these vuvuzelas to not only make a profit for ourselves, but also to increase the school spirit that has been lacking the past couple of years. There were any number of kids that came running up to us after the game asking us to buy more vuvuzelas at the next game. If you can’t handle the kids having a little bit of fun….. it is a high school game you are welcome to stay home but we want to support our friends loud and proud. Furthermore we are not going to stop selling vuvuzelas, we have the right to. If you have a problem with that you are welcome to come up to me and speak with me about it at the game, I’d love to actually settle this like adults in person instead of gossiping about it on the Internet.

Ok listen Reggie, you are a complete idiot. Blowing a horn does not disgrace the black race. That’s not the only dumb thing you said, don’t worry. Malcom X and Dr. King had two completely different teachings. Think before you type something so stupid. The people selling these are genius and you should feel dumb for not thinking of such a good idea first. Blowing horns are annoying sure, if you don’t like it leave. I don’t think anyone will care whether or not you are there. That is all. Go Scots, keep blowing the vevuzelas.

merritt patterson, you are pretty damn annoying to say the least. i dont understand why people (if they even do) like to read your bullshit. My guess is that they are trying to get a quick laugh in so they come to look at your stuck up comments. Personally, i get a kick out of it. I think you should not attend any Highland Park events because all you do is bitch. Instead of taking in what is around you, you find the little things that seem to annoy you. I realize that you have probably only been around people who give you what you want, but it aint reality. Get outta Highland Park and actually experience the real world because i guarantee you, you haven’t. You have a problem with vuvuzuealas, dont go to the game, its that simple. I believe there is a radio station that you could listen to the game on. 1190 am? check it out, but I am sure that you’ll be able to find some errors with that as well. But hey, thats what you do best. I dont respect what you do at all, obviously, and quite frankly i don’t see the point in you harassing youngn’s. You’re always one to point a finger at someone, just remember that there is always three pointing back at you. Keep it real and keep it classy, its hard i know.

And all of you other idiots who find them to be annoying or disruptive to the band, don’t go to the games. Football games are gonna be loud either way, your dumb for expecting the ability to hear the announcers at a home game. The kids selling them are genius and you all are absolute bafoons for thinking this idea was outrageous. If you want to hear a band then go to a concert, thats not what a FOOTBALL game is for. The ones complaining are all stuck up HP parents who complain with the thought of a disruption in their perfect lives. Stop putting that reputation on HP and live with the noise.

I am sorry, but this is all so ridiculous. Kids will be kids. People need to take a step back and remember that. Additionally, the man of African descent needs to realize how absurd and unfounded his comment was. There is absolutely no need to turn this into some commentary on race. That is an uncalled for and rather uneducated statement. These are a fad with absolutely no derogatory intent behind them.

Oh my goodness, Reggie needs to chill OUT. I really don’t think the kids were actively plotting to be racially insensitive by blasting these horns! While they probably were annoying as he*l, it is a high school football game…and unfortunately, the precedent for their use was set at the World Cup. It’s not like they were blowing ’em during Communion or something.

I am almost at a loss for words at the nasty comments written by no doubt students. Almost. I am in disbelief at the self serving, thoughtless and impetuous attitudes that has been thrown around by these CHILDREN. I would be embarrassed if this was my kid. HP Senior, I appreciate that you would like to settle this like adults, but honestly I doubt that would be the case considering your immature comments. Just because you can do something does not make it an inherent right. Is there not a law against selling goods without a permit in the city of UP? Parents are there to support their kids on the football team, drill team and band. They too have a reason to be there. The horns are obnoxious just like your attitudes.

Personally, I hope they check and let us know so everyone who has posted on this comment will know whether each of you is voicing your opinion or whether you are 1 or 2 kids who think your too smart for us adults.

Secondly, you sound like a student so let me clue you in on something; iT’S THE PARENTS THAT PAY PROPERTY TAXES AND THE INVESTORS THAT BUY THE BONDS THAT PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION AND THE FACILITIES THAT MAKE UP HP HIGHSCHOOL. If the parents opinion is that the noise makers are obnoxious then they will be banned without regard to your opinion.

Merritt’s right. Mindlessly blowing a horn at all times during a sporting event has nothing to do with rooting for your team.

Scots student is right: he can blow his horn to “speight” the parents (which, in fact, demonstrates that it was never about supporting the team in the first place).

Reggie: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I don’t see the problem with the horns as long as they are blown only when the Scots are on defense. Other schools have cowbells or propane tanks full of bb’s. Might as well blow those horns. But only on defense. The offense needs to hear the audibles.

Screw the band. They take 2/3 of the game off to get ready for halftime or take a break after halftime. So few people pay attention to the game anyway that the horns make up for those sitting on their hands.

I’m not a student, but “it’s the internet” needs to understand that this is a blog that invites comments. If you don’t like the comments, threatening to track down an IP address isn’t going to invite people with dissenting opinions. After all, isn’t that the point of the blog? They may be students, but I think they will have an opinion on something that they feel affects them.

Anyone who watched the World Cup saw this coming down the track. The vuvuzelas are banned in numerous places, and, as my student indicated, they are banned from pep rallies already. Take a chill pill folks, this too shall pass. Let them have some fun for a little while, even if they do have a bad attitude.

It’s the internets and Reggie are the same person, right? Both were pretty funny but the irony worked better with Reggie.

I’m just gonna guess but I’m pretty sure the bond on the stadium has been paid for years. And between the activity fees, tickets, concessions and Sports Club I would guess the football team is more or less self supporting.

There was a team in the playoffs a couple years ago that would fill propane tanks with ball bearings, others go crazy with cow bells, now the mighty Scots have horns. This seems like one where people should chill.

    Its the Internet,

There are ways to get around that too. Besides, the comments you are referring to were inarticulate and childish, and it appears they got exactly the reaction the kids were looking for–regardless of how many kids wrote them. I think most people see those comments for what they are. The ominous threat just seems pointless–especially when it sounds like someone from the paper who supports this blog wrote it.

If you are unhappy with the stupid horns, voice your opinion to the administration. Quite frankly, I find the competing drum corps equally annoying when they practice before the half time show. Unfortunately, I can’t stop that.

I sat next to a bunch of kids blowing their horns and actually I didn’t really notice them during the game. Kids screaming was much worse than the horns.

All the kids have iPhones. There is an App you can download of the Vuvuleza for free. They can just play the app if they want to make noise.

Your guess would be wrong about the stadium. New lights, new PA system, did something with the press area and they did something in relation to a seal coat on the concrete floor of the stands. There was no irony in my previous comment. When you pay for it you can have the right to be part of the decision-making.

The Vuvuzelas were painted either gold or blue, and nobody seemed to be too offended by them. It’s not like the world cup where there were thousands. I even overheard someone jokingly telling the band director that he “should consider starting a new band”. It’s a sporting event, people are going to go crazy, especially seniors, so let it be. If no body is at risk of getting hurt, no need to worry.

And as for you Kmom, don’t you have anything better to do than post sarcastic comments on here? Just let us have fun supporting our friends. In a few months, the season will be over anyway.
