Rise and Shine, Park Cities (2-9-11)

1. If you’re counting at home, that’s five snow days this year for Highland Park ISD (I am beginning to lose count). So, how are you going to keep your kids occupied today?

2. And just in case your pipes didn’t burst during the first phase of snowpocalypse, Highland Park DPS wants to remind you to keep your cabinets open and wrap your pipes. And just in case your pipes do begin to spew forth, DPS officers themselves will shut your water off if you give them a buzz. Bet that would’ve been helpful to SMU.

3. And folks, according to ERCOT, we’re on a “power watch” today. I guess that means you can’t have your thermostat on 72 with all the TVs playing this.

UPDATE: According to University Park’s own Steve Mace, night court is canceled tonight. (We all know that the real Night Court was tragically canceled in 1992.)

    This is our 5TH day of no school. Ridiculous! My kids are feeling stressed out with all the work they are trying to make up from last week.

    The weather is ridiculous.

    As a teacher for HPISD that doesn’t live in the Park Cities, I truly appreciate Dr. Orr considering our safety.

    If school had remained open, it would have been difficult for any learning to take place. Many teachers would not have been able to make it in due to dangerous travel conditions. Some teachers would have to stay home to care for their children since other districts and daycare are closed. There wouldn’t have been enough substitutes to cover the classes. They would face the same travel issues. Classes without teachers would just sit in the cafeteria or gym with minimal supervision.

    We are aware that the students are under tremendous pressure with the end of the grading period looming and teachers trying to meet their requirements for grades. In addition, extracurricular activities are having to be rescheduled, many for this week. The administration received permission from UIL to extend our grading period two days. (Maybe we will get an added extention due to this closure.) That will allow final tests, quizzes, and projects to be more spread out. Hopefully, this will relieve some of the students’ stress.

    Safety first! I had a doctor appointment this morning and it was VERY dangerous out there. Cars unable to make it up the slightest incline, unable to stop for red lights and fishtailing just driving down Greenville at 5 mph. The decision to cancel school was absolutely the right one. Yes, my kids are going a little stir crazy and yes, they are having to do a lot of work to make up the assignments so close to the end of the grading period. I commend our administration for making the decision to keep our teachers, staff, administration and students (and their families) safe. Not much we can do about bad weather.

    @kmom:

    Not at UP, those cafeteria moms and dads are ever so dedicated and responsible!
