Park Cities Trivia Continues Just For The Fun Of It

There are some real brain trusts around these parts. Last week’s comments really reached way back and all around for answers. Let’s see what kind of input these questions get:

  1. Was there ever a gasoline station in Highland Park Village?
  2. What was Lambert’s green?
  3. Whose mother wrote “Teen Telescope” in The Dallas Times Herald?
  4. Where was the pet store on Preston Road and who owned it?
  5. What did EM, LA, TA and RI stand for?

Bonus out-of-the-bubble question: What was Deuback’s?

No prize this week, but rumors are floating that we just might have a reward next week. Stay tuned.

#4. Pet store was on the block next to Vintage car wash. Think it was on the corner and was called “Great Pets”, had a good fish room/selection. 100% sure of the location, not 100% on the name.

Total side note. Anyone remember Bobby’s Snow Cones that used to be across from Bubba’s; Penguin’s Frozen Yogurt that was on Hillcrest; Alex’s (possibly Alex’s Fried Chicken) in the spot where Olivella’s is now; or Boxies ?sp Boxy’s in preston center where corner bakery is now?

Dunlap-Swain had a Texaco station in HP Village. “LA” and “EM” were telephone prefixes for HP (Lakeside) and University Park (Emerson), respectively.

The Beckers owned a pet store – Preston Center?

Telephone exchanges. For example LA is 52, stood for Lakeside. HP Town Hall would be Lakeside 1-4161.

1, There were 2 stations in HPV, a Dunlap Swain and next to it Chape Chapin’s Texaco.
2.Lambert’s Green was the official color of Lambert Landscaping Co. They even painted a railroad overpass near their office on Cedar Springs that color as well as all their trucks, etc.
    4. Can’t remember the name, but it was owned by Howard Crow and was at the far north end of the block where Tom Thumb, now CVS is.
Deuback’s was “way out” on Greenville Ave in Vickery, TX even a little further out than Vickery Park (huge swimming pool). The skating rink was where all class parties, birthday parties were held. No inside plumbing!

@Avid Reader: It was Bobby’s Snow Balls not Snow Cones. According to Bobby, balls and cones are different….his ice was very fine….so maybe that was the difference. I remember it so well! My family loved that place. I suspect the winters killed him – no one thinks about snow balls when it is 30 degrees outside.

Bobby’s Snow Balls was great! I don’t think the winters killed him. (However, it could have been terrible kids like I was. We learned that if you tried to pay in pennies, he just gave you whatever it was for free.)

I seem to remember that Bobby had the store with his father’s start up help to pay for SMU law school. Perhaps, he just moved on to bigger and better.

Lubbock (Rockwall, Rowlett, and Garland)have “Bahama Bucks” where you can get a similar fix on the slighly more refined snow like Bobby served.

The filling station in the Village was Chape Chapins–we would go in and get the car filled up and then say “Charge it” and we would be on the way.
Deubeks was the roller skating rink on Greenvile across from what is now Royal Oaks Country Club. I saw Mrs. Deubeks obituary in the paper this morning.

There were TWO “filling stations” in the HPV, next to each other where Starbuck’s, Channel, etc. are today – they utilized that entire space.

Jean Deuback, who operated Deuback Skating Rink with her husband, retired and moved to Bowie 22 years ago. The Deubacks had just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Feb. 1.

Am sad to report Mrs. Debuack died Monday at the age of 89.

Don’t know why joeat up above stated Deuback’s had no inside plumbing!? Am I reading that right!? grins!! If my memory is correct I remember being lifted up by “people bigger than me” so I could get MANY a Drink’s from a Water Fountain and I also remember using the Restroom many, many, many times and yes, the toilets flushed lol….with water. My Parent’s basically grew up there and I think “Met each other there around 1958”. I will have to ask them to be sure. Maybe someone remembers them, T Walker and B Morris? Played lots of Roller Hockey and Skated Lots!! They are still kickin’!! I Love them both VERY much and they celebrated being together for 55 yrs and Married for 52 on August 27th. They used to Hang Out at Deuback’s for MANY years and had lots of Friends there. Was sad to hear about Jean as well but were too ill to go.
