HPISD One of Many ‘Granddaddy’ Lawsuit Plaintiffs

If you’re vested in Texas’ educational system, you probably know initial hearings have begun this week for “the grandaddy” (Judge John Dietz’s term) of all school finance trials.

HPISD and around 600 other school districts are involved in the massive suit, which will highlight billions in state funding cuts, and question Texas’ fiscal approach to education as academic standards become more stringent and regulated.

Whoever’s running Texasisd.com is updating regularly with Twitter feeds and links to good news coverage, so keep it in your search queries. I’ll be checking in too, especially in regard to events (if any) that’re specific to HPISD. Interesting stuff.

    Our problem is not funding from the State, HPISD has plenty of money. We are just tired of sending 67%+ of our local money to other districts with no say on how it’s spent. Numerous studies have shown that increasing funding doesn’t improve student performance. Look at studies of Washington DC and Chicago schools. Both spend significantly more per student and have worse performance than Texas students. While HPISD’s participation in this lawsuit is commendable, even a positive outcome doesn’t solve our real problem.
