HP Town Council Tables Talk on Outdoor Lights

The Highland Park Town Council decided to table an agenda topic this morning regarding regulations on residential outdoor lighting.

The proposed ordinance states that the intent is to “require outdoor lighting to be positioned and/or arranged so that light trespass is reduced onto neighboring residential properties.”

“It’s the impact of lighting that we’re focusing on,” said Councilman Andrew Barr, opening a discussion on the wording of the ordinance.

Barr also expressed concern for enforcement of the exception: “decorative holiday lights used not more than 60 days out of any 365-day period,” claiming that such regulation would be unrealistic.

The ordinance was pulled from the agenda to be reworked, and will resurface for the council’s vote in two weeks.
