SMU’s Hunt Headed to Cincinnati

Former SMU defensive end Margus Hunt was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 21st pick of the second round (53rd overall pick) of the NFL Draft on Friday.

Hunt (6-8, 280) is the highest draft pick from SMU since 1986. That year, Rod Jones was taken at No. 25, and teammate Reggie Dupard was taken No. 26.

Hunt, who is from Estonia, was an absolute beast for the Mustangs this season. In addition to being named the Most Valuable Player of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, Hunt was also a first-team All-Conference USA selection. He had eight quarterback sacks and 11 hurries, helping the Ponies finish 7-6 and win a bowl game.

Hunt, the eighth SMU player drafted in the last five years, also broke the NCAA record for blocked field goals.

Having seen Hunt play several times, I fell pretty confident in saying he was taken too low. And I expect some NFL teams to be kicking themselves for not taking him when they had a chance.

A junior world champion in *both* the shot and discus, Margus will be a beast in the NFL. A 6’8″ defensive end with a 4.6 40. Scary.
