National Eating Disorder Association Walk To Benefit Elisa Project, Raise Awareness

As someone who’s seen friends come close to death, only to be saved by last minute intervention, I know the need for vigilance and self-education about eating disorders, which is why every time I hear about events meant to raise awareness I try to pay attention.

This year’s National Eating Disorder Association walk on May 11 is hosted by and will also benefit the Elisa Project, a Dallas-based non-profit. The Elisa Project was founded in 1999 by the parents of Highland Park graduate Elisa McCall, who took her life in 1994, to help prevent and treat eating disorders through education and advocacy.

The walk program, which starts at 8:30 a.m. at Parish Episcopal School, will feature keynote speaker Johanna Kandel, founder of the Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness, and honorary walk chair Brian Cuban.

Cuban – a Preston Hollow resident, lawyer and little brother of Mark Cuban – wrote about his struggle to survive his eating disorder in his book, Shattered Image: My Pain and Triumph In My Struggle With Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder, please contact a medical professional. You can also call NEDA’s toll free, confidential helpline at 1-800-931-2237 Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There is help. There is hope.
