Freshman Phenom Likely To Join Scots

Although he is just now about to start high school, Lindell Stone is already known in football circles.

Stone (6-1, 180) reportedly received a scholarship offer from UCLA last year. The young quarterback will likely be transferring from (Southlake) Carroll ISD into Highland Park, according to a Dallas Morning News report.

Stone recently attended Scots head coach Randy Allen’s camp for quarterbacks and receivers. Allen said his parents informed him they have purchased a home in University Park. Stone also has two younger brothers who play football.

Highland Park opens practice at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

I know Coach Allen is smart enough to cross the Ts, dot the Is and make damned sure there’s no recruiting or favorable real estate terms offered to the family before they move here.

Sad to see such young kids becoming commodities in this way. Amateur sports promote good values. Professional sports do just the opposite. Horrible to see the business of sport encroaching on younger and younger lives. Scholarship offers to middle schoolers? Parents buying homes just to put a kid into the right “farm system”? It’s warped. It’s driven by greed, and it sends all the wrong signals, especially to a kid that young.

This kid’s dad graduated from SMU and has many long time friends in the Park Cities and has done well in his career so there is no financial incentive for the family to move. I feel bad for the ninth grade qb who has been groomed to be the starter when his time comes and now a far superior qb is now set to lead the Scots for the next few years in a Matt Stafford kind of way.

I hear he’s really quite talented. And a nice kid. I don’t have a problem with a family moving into the neighborhood to send their son to a school with a good football program. It’s not like he’s changing high schools to play. He’s a rising freshman. I’m sure you know that there are plenty of students at HP who have moved here just for sports. Let’s welcome the family. It can only help the Scots.

Will his time at HP surpass Patrick Witt’s?
