St. Mark’s senior wide receiver John Caldwell has been named the private school Built Ford Tough Texas High School Player of the Week. The award is given to a player in all six classifications each week of the season for their work on and off the field.

Caldwell had a monster game last week with 15 catches for 313 yards and four touchdowns to help the Lions stay perfect in SPC North play with a 31-14 victory over Irving Cistercian.

“He has a unique ability to stretch the field with his great speed,” St. Mark’s head coach Bart Epperson said. “And he’s even better in heavy traffic, using his leaping ability to get the ball in a crowd.”

Caldwell, who plays baseball and is thinking about basketball this winter, has Ivy League programs such as Harvard, Yale, and Penn vying for his services. A national Merit Scholar semi-finalist and an Eagle Scout, Caldwell volunteers at the Austin Street Shelter, assisting single moms with their kids, and with the Salvation Army, delivering clothes to the homeless among other things.

He will be presented his award at the St. Mark’s pep rally at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
