Jesuit-Sheaner Relays Celebrates Milestone

The prestigious Jesuit-Sheaner Relays is among the top events on the high school track calendar each spring, but Saturday’s installment will have added significance as the meet celebrates its 50th anniversary.

I’ll let Jesuit explain the details on this press release that I’ve copied after the jump.

On Saturday, March 22, over 100 schools from Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas will be sending athletes to Jesuit Dallas for the 50th anniversary of the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays. Hosting over 1,000 athletes, including nearly 30 state champions, numerous All-Americans and a number of nationally-ranked performers, the event is set to become the largest and most competitive high school-only track & field meet in the history of the state.

In addition to serving as a spotlight for many of the region’s top male performers, select top female teams and individuals will be competing at the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays for the first time in the history of the meet.

The atmosphere on Jesuit’s campus will be very similar to a state meet, especially considering the quality of the competition. In the 4×100-meter relay, the nation’s second-fastest team from a year ago, Texarkana High, headlines a powerful field that also includes the reigning Texas 4A state champions as well as the reigning state champs from Lousiana. The state shot put and discus champions from Kansas, the 100m and 200m state champions from Louisiana, and the Texas 5A cross country champion are all part of a superb grouping of athletes that is sure to make the 50th running of the Sheaner-Relays one of the nation’s top showcases this spring.

A number of dignitaries will be honored as part of the festivities, including former 200m national record holder Roy Martin, Olympic Gold medalist and World Champion Jeremy Wariner, world class hurdler and sprinter Eddie Southern, seven-time NCAA champion and Olympic medalist Michael Carter, legendary head coach Mike Nelson, two-time Olympian and current American record holder Michelle Carter, Dallas city councilman Tennell Atkins, and former U.S. Navy four-star admiral and commander of the Pacific Fleet Pat Walsh.

Field events begin at 8 a.m. with prelims for the track events to run on a rolling schedule starting at 9:15 a.m. With the exception of the distance medley relay and the 3200m, which will have timed finals in the morning, the track finals will begin at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
