We’re familiar with Clayton Kershaw winning National League Cy Young awards by this time. He took home his third in the past four years on Wednesday. But on Thursday, the former Highland Park standout also was named the NL MVP.

It’s a very rare honor for a pitcher. The Los Angeles Dodgers lefty became just the second NL pitcher to sweep both awards, joining Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, who did it in 1968. Kershaw went 21-3 this season, recorded a 1.77 earned-run average, tallied 239 strikeouts, threw a no-hitter, and led the Dodgers to the NL West title.

So he’s busy cementing his legacy as one of the top pitchers of his generation. And if it’s possible for Kershaw’s offseason to get any better, his wife, Ellen, is expecting their first child in January.
