Dieb, Thornton Advance to State in Wrestling
Stephen Dieb and Michael Thornton will represent Highland Park at the Class 6A state wrestling tournament this weekend in Garland, after both finished second at the Region II tournament on Saturday in Allen.
Dieb (36-4), a junior who won a 4A state title last year as a sophomore, will compete in the 145-pound weight class and will face Brian Sauceda of PSJA North in the first round. Sauceda (21-7) placed third in Region IV.
Thornton (34-3), a senior who was fourth at state a year ago, will compete at 195 pounds and meet Darius Fulghum of Killeen Ellison in his first match. Fulghum (39-3) is the third-place finisher from Region III.
At the regional tournament, Dieb lost to Allen’s Braeden Redlin in the championship match, while Thornton fell to DeVaughn Scott of Hebron.
The first three rounds of the state tournament will take place on Friday at the Culwell Center, with the consolation rounds and finals set for Saturday.
