Highland Park isn’t sure of its playoff fate if it defeats Richardson Pearce in the regular-season finale tonight. But the Scots are certain what will happen if they lose.

The Scots (15-15, 6-7) and Mustangs (18-12, 6-7) are among three teams tied for fourth place in the District 10-6A standings with one game remaining. Only one of them will claim the district’s final postseason berth.

That means when HP travels to Pearce, it needs a win to avoid a losing season and continue a streak of playoff appearances that dates back two decades.

The Mustangs won the first meeting this season 59-50 on Jan. 23, but HP has some momentum after a 66-49 win over North Mesquite on Friday. Pearce has dropped its last two games.

If the Scots win tonight and Mesquite Horn defeats Richardson Berkner, HP and Horn will be tied and will hold a tiebreaker of some sort later this week for the right to face District 9-6A champion Skyline in the bi-district round next week.

If HP triumphs and Horn loses, of course, then the Scots will have their ticket punched to the postseason in their first season at the Class 6A level.
