Was last year’s ESD football team the best in school history? What about this year? Possibly so, but players and coaches from the 2007 squad achieved something the current Eagles haven’t yet — back-to-back SPC titles.

ESD will try to match that feat on Saturday when the Eagles face Fort Worth All Saints in the SPC small-school championship game in Round Rock.

It will be a showdown between two of the top offenses in the conference. The Eagles (9-1) recorded their highest score of the season during a 56-21 win over Arlington Oakridge last week in the semifinals.

But as impressive as that output was — with big games from Seth Washington and Nakeie Montgomery — the ESD defense deserves just as much credit for shutting down the powerful Owls, thanks in part to four interceptions.

The Saints (9-1) enter the title game with a nine-game winning streak, and haven’t been held under 33 points all season with quarterback Luke Anthony at the helm. ASES pummeled Houston Christian 48-6 last week.

All Saints won the small-school crown in consecutive years in 2012 and 2013, and has taken home the trophy five times since 2002. ESD, of course, has earned three titles during that span.

The SPC also will contest championships in several other sports this weekend in the Austin area, including boys and girls volleyball and cross country, and field hockey.
In volleyball, the St. Mark’s boys and Greenhill girls are each top seeds in their respective brackets, with the Lions as three-time defending champions.
