Felix Van Cauwelaert will represent Highland Park at the Class 6A state swimming meet beginning Friday in Austin.

He qualified by finishing on the podium in two events at the Region II meet on Feb. 6 in Rockwall. The sophomore placed third in both the boys 200 individual medley and the boys 100 backstroke, leading the Blue Wave to a third-place finish in the boys team standings.

In the 200 IM, Van Cauwelaert’s regional time of 1 minute, 51.78 seconds broke an HP school record set by Jeff Livingston in 1995.

Van Cauwelaert competed at state last year as a freshman as part of a 400 freestyle relay team that finished seventh. That quartet also included his older brother Jasper.

HP won’t have any female swimmers at the state meet this year, ending a lengthy streak for a program that won several state titles in the 2000s.
