The Highland Park girls beat Richardson Berkner twice in the span of 24 hours to earn a third-place finish at the HP Scot Classic tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Scots (4-2) rolled to a 69-39 win in the third-place game, led by 22 points from SMU signee Morgan Smith. Mary Kemp added 12 points and Mary Margaret Roberts had 11 for HP, which led 26-5 after the first quarter.

Earlier in the tournament, the Lady Scots crushed Ursuline 76-23 in the first round and held off a late Berkner rally in the second round. Then they fell 63-49 to eventual tournament champion Wylie in the semifinals. Smith led HP in scoring in all four games.

Wylie’s Madi Miller scored 27 points against the Lady Scots, eventually claiming tournament MVP honors after the Lady Pirates topped Trinity Christian 56-31 in the championship game.

On the boys side, HP won two games (both against HSAA) and lost two, finishing in fifth place in the six-team field.

The Scots (3-2) opened with a 63-48 victory over HSAA, then suffered a lopsided 74-51 loss to South Grand Prairie. An upset 59-58 defeat against Lake Highlands on Saturday morning sent them to the fifth-place game, where HP scored a 62-52 win over HSAA.

Ethan Nussbaum paced the Scots in scoring during the first two games, including a 21-point effort against SGP, while Alex Staffaroni led the way in the final two contests.

SGP guard Kelyn Pennie, who scored 22 points against the Scots, was named the tournament MVP. The Warriors (4-0) rallied past Midlothian 66-58 in the championship game on Saturday.

Both HP teams will hit the road for nondistrict games this week, with the girls traveling to Mansfield Legacy on Monday and the boys facing Arlington Bowie on Tuesday.
