FASCINATING RHYTHMS: GERSHWIN, PIAZZOLLA AND MASON
May 3 @ 7:30 pm
One event on May 4, 2019 at 7:30pm
Avant Chamber Ballet’s artistic director Katie Cooper and music director David Cooper created a program for music lovers when designing “Fascinating Rhythms: Gershwin, Piazzolla and Mason” all with live music. “This type of program has something for everyone,” says Katie Cooper. “Jazzy George Gershwin, sizzling Astor Piazzolla and the world premiere of Quinn Mason’s String Quartet #2.”
The evening opens with George Balanchine’s Who Cares? an audience favorite which perfectly pairs Gershwin’s toe-tapping melodies with Balanchine’s genius choreography. The score will be performed with live chamber orchestra conducted by Brad Cawyer.
Next is Paul Mejia’s Cafe Victoria, a company premiere. The ballet uses Piazzolla’s alluring “Contrabajissimo” to create a moody and sensual scene at a “barre”.
Closing the program is the world premiere of Sisterhood choreographed by Katie Cooper with music by local composer Quinn Mason. Mr, Mason is a 22 year old local composer currently studying at SMU. He has had much critical and popular acclaim and is currently working on a commission for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra which will premiere in 2019. His personal mission is to write music that is, “Based in traditional classical music, but reflects the times in which we currently live”. The costumes will be designed by Austin-based Outdoor Voices which is known for stylish and innovative athletic wear.
